Photos And Useful Information About Yanakie
Yanakie is the last major town on the way to Wilsons Promontory in South Gippsland. There is boat access from several places on either side of the road on this thin peninsula with a mix of dairy farm land and natural bush found in the Corner Inlet Coastal Park and the Shallow Inlet Coastal Park. You will also find details of accommodation, adventure tours, charter fishing and other things to see and do in the local area further down this page. Yanakie tends to attract the fishing enthusiasts because of the easy access to great boating facilities and varied locations for catching numerous fish varieties. It’s so close to the gateway of Wilsons Promontory National Park that you’d be crazy to consider staying anywhere else.
Yanakie Accommodation – The Yanakie Caravan Park is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities for holiday makers, fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers. With beautiful views to the mountains of Wilsons Prom, Mount Best, the Strzelecki Ranges, bush walking tacks and the boat ramp at your back door, what more could you want for a weekend getaway. There are quite a number of Bed & Breakfast, self-contained cottages, cabins, fishing huts, quality guest houses and different types of holiday rental accommodation available.
Boat Ramps at Yanakie – There is one at Duck Point behind the Caravan Park, but you’ll need choose your time wisely because of the tidal restrictions. Several others are located on the other side of the main road at Shallow Inlet.
Yanakie Real Estate – Most properties in this area have a magnificent outlook toward either the mountains of Wilsons Prom, the Strzelecki Ranges, the Toora Windfarm or the tranquil water views of Corner Inlet. According to the tourist information, this area was first settled in 1850 and the lush pasture is still being used for grazing sheep and cattle. Check with any of the Real Estate Agents in Foster or Leongatha for details of what is available to buy or rent. Yanakie is becoming a more sought-after-area and several of the Melbourne Real Estate Agents have exclusive listings here too. The prices vary considerably, from expensive prime water view properties, on acreage, to bargain priced holiday houses. A very nice, freshly renovated home on the main road just sold for around $170,000.
Things To Do At Yanakie – Bushwalking, windsurfing in Shallow Inlet, fishing, swimming, boating, bird watching, horse riding, scenic light plane flights over Wilsons prom, kite surfing and general site-seeing in this peaceful and unique part of Victoria, make it an ideal destination for people who prefer nature and the outdoors.
Flower, Trees, Shrubs and Rock Formations – The local flora is quite amazing, with some species of plants found exclusively along this coastline. We saw the native New Zealand Spinach, Sea Spinach or Warrigal Greens (Tetragonia tetragonioides – as pictured above in the centre) growing wild on the beach and along fence lines. I grow New Zealand Spinach in my garden at home and use it in place of Silverbeet or English Spinach, as it is a hardy perennial plant and needs no maintenance. It must be cooked (boiled or steamed) before eating as I’ve heard it can be toxic in large quantities. I took more pictures of colourful rock formations, fungi, aquatic plants and native flora than I could fit on these pages, but you can find more examples in our new photo gallery, especially on the Yanakie page.
Native Wildlife – There’s no shortage of Wombats, Emus, Echidnas, Possums, Koalas, Kangaroos and Wallabies to be seen, especially being so close the the national park. So, be particularly careful when driving at night time, as they wander freely in this area.
Corner Inlet/Shallow Inlet Coastal And Marine Parks – Access to these areas can be gained by driving toward either of the Caravan Parks in Yanakie. It is well worth making some time to go site-seeing or bushwalking through the area as it is quite special.
