Photos And Useful Information About The Meeniyan Township
How To Get To Meeniyan – When travelling from Melbourne, find your way to the South Gippsland Highway. You’ll first drive through Korumburra, Leongatha and Koonwarra before you get to Meeniyan. If you see the Stony Creek Racecourse, you’ve gone too far.
About The Township of Meeniyan – This quaint little town is also called ‘the turning point’, meaning it is the place you turn off the South Gippsland Highway, when on your way to Wilsons Promontory. An activity that made Meeniyan unique, was the making of the ABC series “Bed Of Roses” which was predominantly filmed in the region. See more below.

The Town Is Also Famous
Meeniyan was one of the major local South Gippsland towns used for filming the popular ABC mini series called ‘Bed Of Roses‘. It was turned into a different town for several weeks, and the signs on the shops and post office were transformed so well that I heard that several motorists looking for Meeniyan, missed the town altogether because they were under the impression it was called ‘Rainbow’s End‘. The local pizza shop showed up as a Chinese Takeaway during the filming and it was funny to hear of the number of people who actually thought it had changed ownership as a result. One guy I know dropped in to the empty shop with a gymnasium sign on it to find out when the new gym was opening. What fun they must have had explaining it was only temporary. Entertainment
Tavern Nights – On a regular basis various recording artists are invited to perform at the Meeniyan Hall which is what I have heard to be, a fabulous night of entertainment. Entry is very affordable (usually around $6) and you are asked to bring your own drinks, glasses and nibbles. Children under 14 are free.
Meeniyan Art Gallery – A visit to the Art Gallery in Meeniyan will reward you with the opportunity to see a different exhibition each month. They also hold art classes, workshops and education days and the Gallery shop is a nice place to sit and have a cappuccino and piece of cake.
Meeniyan Golf Club Functions – The fully licensed clubhouse set in around 100 acres of beautiful rural bushland is available for all kinds of functions. Conveniently located only 4km south of Meeniyan and 19 km from Leongatha, on the Meeniyan-Promontory Road. Might as well play a round of golf in Meeniyan while you’re there.
Photographs Of Meeniyan
The photos below were taken between 2008 and 2010 so they are more of historical value than an accurate reading of what is there now. While visiting Meeniyan to take photographs for the website back then, I took the opportunity to walk along the Great Southern Rail Trail and check out the new bridge that now connects this walking track all the way through to Leongatha. Included on the bottom of this page are pictures of the township, various shops, the local parklands and even pictures taken of what was left after the Supermarket burned down in 2009. It has since been replaced with a fresh new building. Find pictures of The Great Southern Rail Trail here.
