Koonwarra Village - Koonwarra is a picturesque rural village on the South Gippsland Highway between Foster and Leongatha. Generally known for it's environmental and sustainable practices, it's a relatively small town with only seven businesses, but all are enthusiastic and passionate about their interests and keen to share their knowledge and talents. Koonwarra is environmentally conscious and actively demonstrating sustainable living. It was the first "Waste Wise Village" in Australia, and is Plastic Bag Free.
Shops And Businesses - If you wish to learn a new cooking technique, pick up a plant you haven't seen before, browse the clothing racks, buy a unique piece of furniture, have a massage or spa, speak with somebody about the benefits of organics, enjoy a meal and a drink at the iconic Koonwarra Store or just wander in the gardens and listen to the play of the fountains and the birds, you will definitely be caught up in their enthusiasm.
Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre - The former Primary School is now the home of the Koonwarra Sustainable Communities Centre and is the Centre for environmental education. It moderates South Gippsland Freecycle and administers www.koonwarra.vic.au. You are welcome to picnic in the peaceful four acre grounds that contains an in-ground cooking pit, kitchen garden, oval, maze (under construction) and substantial native trees.
The Great Southern Rail Trail - The old railway line was converted to a walking/riding track and runs through the Koonwarra Village. It's the ideal place to take the family for a safe and interesting bike ride or just walk peacefully along any section of its expanse from Toora through to Leongatha.
Koonwarra Farmers Market - Koonwarra is also famous for its Farmers Market that is held on the 1st Saturday of each month. The highly sought after, farm fresh, organic produce, is guaranteed to be on offer.
Koonwarra Recreation Reserve - A beautiful and peaceful place to have a picnic or just relax and listen to the birds.
The Kitchen Garden Project - A healthy way to produce organic fruit and vegetables and a useful project for anyone to get involved in. Contact the Sustainable Communities Centre to find out more.
Whatever happens, a memorable visit to Koonwarra is assured. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and experience its abundance and vision for a sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
