Foster

About Foster - Foster can be found as you travel along the South Gippsland Highway midway between Leongatha and Yarram. Being 169 km south-east of Melbourne it's a comfortable 2 hour drive which makes Foster a popular tourist destination and day trip.

The Foster retail shops provide the main source of food and supplies for Wilson's Promontory and several of the surrounding towns such as Port Franklin, Toora, Sandy Point, Yanakie and Fish Creek.

Originally called Stockyard Creek (after the stream which still flows through the centre of the town), Foster was mainly used by drovers as a resting place as they traveled from Port Albert to Westernport.

gold mining in Foster

Gold Fever - Gold was discovered near this memorial at Pearl Park in the 1870's and drew a large crowd of settlers 'trying their luck' at the time. The mines were then abandoned in the 1930's.

Pearl Park - At the top end of Main Street Foster is 'Pearl Park' where a timber bridge passes over the Stockyard Creek. It's a cool and shady place to rest on a hot summers day.

This area was used in late 2007 to film the Buddhist funeral in the ABC TV mini-series "Bed Of Roses'.

Interesting Murals, Sculptures And Artwork - Around Foster and many other surrounding towns, there are a variety of art galleries, craft displays, exhibitions, sculptures, murals, carvings and decorations that make great snapshots for your travel album.

Foster reservior provides water for the town

Foster Reservoir - Officially opened in 1997, an abundant water supply is provided for the township of Foster by several dams on Ameys track.

Situated in a picturesque location this reservoir is kept in pristine condition and you can just see the views to Wilson's Promontory and the Toora Wind Farm in the distance.

The giant dam holds 242 magalitres of water, covers approximately 22 hectares of land and is an integral part of drought management in the region.
